Program Description: 

This educational activity is designed to provide our faculty with alternative sources of information and experience on controversial areas in diagnostic pathology that cannot be gleaned from reading the literature or standard textbooks in pathology.  There are many areas in pathology where a uniformly acceptable standard has not yet been established.  Direct interaction with an expert can provide the pathologist with additional insight into more effective ways to handle the issue.

At the conclusion of the lecture I will be able to:

1.Discuss the pathogenesis of X-linked myotubular myopathy, and various non-genetic treatments that have been used in animal models.
2.Discuss the potential benefits and risks of gene therapy in myotubular myopathy and the pathological analysis strategies that have been used as we attempt to progress to the human clinical trial stage.
3.Discuss the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and the strategies we have used to assist progression of gene therapy in this disease to the human clinical trial stage.
