29th Annual John R. Teggatz Forensic Science Seminar

Milwaukee, WI US
November 12, 2019 to November 13, 2019

This educational intervention is designed to provide education necessary in the field of pediatric death investigation; particularly in emerging trends in cannabinoid and opiate-related deaths.  Opiate-related deaths of children increased approximately 400 percent in recent years, with 8 young children dying from opiate overdoses in less than 3 years in Milwaukee County. The majority of medico-legal death investigators and forensic pathologists work in jurisdictions defined by geographic boundaries as set by state statutes.  Barriers to death investigations include lack of discussion and knowledge of emerging trends in surrounding geographic areas due to “silos” of information at each institution.  This activity will enable practitioners to gather and disseminate information and learn from each other, including best practices, and foster relationships to continue further discussion and knowledge-sharing.
