Early Childhood Caries: Understanding and Preventing the Disease

The Surgeon General has called dental and oral diseases America's silent epidemic.Young children can acquire an oral disease called Early Childhood Caries (ECC). ECC is the most common infectious disease of childhood  and it is increasing in the United States. ECC is associated with facial and oral infections,hospitalization and emergency department visits,new carious lesions, risk for delayed physical growth  and development, lost school days, and diminished ability to learn.

Pediatricians should play a central role in oral healthcare and preventing ECC. However, pediatricians  receive very little oral health education during medical school and residency. This course will give pediatricians the knowledge needed to educate parents and assess children regarding ECC.

Pediatricians report receiving only 1-4 hours of oral health education during medical school and residency. Additionally,research suggests that lack of training may serve as a barrier to pediatricians' involvement in their patient's oral healthcare.A fundamental gap exists between the oral health knowledge a pediatrician has and what is required to educate parents and assess children regarding ECC.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

  1. Minimize the infection associated with ECC by understanding the pathophysiology of the carious process, the bacteria that cause ECC and the route of infectivity.
  2. Administer a caries risk assessment.
  3. Perform oral health anticipatory guidance.
  4. Perform clinical interventions for oral health.
  5. Refer for treatment by understanding the clinical stages of ECC.
