Pediatric Sleep Conference

Wauwatosa, WI US
September 19, 2014

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has the only Sleep Center in Wisconsin that is solely dedicated to the care of children with sleep disorders. We see more than 1000 patients in sleep clinic and over 1000 patients in our sleep lab annually. Because of our robust pediatric sleep center, we frequently receive calls from community pediatricians with questions about the evaluation of a child with suspected sleep disorder and/or when to refer to the sleep center for further evaluation. There is also a misunderstanding in the medical community that every child with a sleep disorder needs a sleep study when in reality, many require a sleep clinic evaluation and may not need a sleep study for diagnosis. Community pediatricians are in a position to screen for sleep disorders in children and initiate prompt evaluation or intervention.

According to studies, an average of 4.4 hours is spent on sleep education in pediatric residency programs1. Medical school curriculums also have limited sleep education with an average of just under 2.5 hours 2. Based on the minimal sleep education in medical school and post-graduate programs, it is unlikely that physicians have the knowledge to feel comfortable to evaluate and start initial management (if indicated) of pediatric sleep disorders.
