Reach Out and Read Wisconsin Seventh Annual Meeting (2018)

Research shows 90% of brain development occurs between birth and age 5. During this critical time, parents and caregivers who read aloud to their kids are building early language and literacy skills that will allow children to enter kindergarten ready to learn. Wisconsin’s educational achievement disparity are among the worst in the nation.

Early intervention programs like Reach Out and Read can work to alleviate these disparities. Our annual meeting’s objective is to provide education and information to foster a literacy rich environment within primary care clinics. We will educate our attendees on early literacy development strategies, clinical skills for engaging with Amish/Mennonite families, and the latest research in regards to brain and child development. 

Children who are not exposed to reading from a very young age, enter kindergarten with lower vocabulary scores and are unprepared to learn to read. Of those children with limited reading exposure, 88% never catch-up. Learning to read is a life-long skill which impacts school performance, positive community engagement, employability, and life-long health. 

Target Audience

Medical providers (and other staff) at pediatric and family medicine clinics who provide Reach Out and Read early literacy services, or are in application to develop a Reach Out and Read program.

Learning Objectives

  1. List two long-term health outcomes correlated with five or more adverse childhood experiences.
  2. Describe three ways to improve engagement and communication with immigrant and refugee families.
  3. List three red flags for low adult literacy and three strategies to improve patient understanding of their and their child's health condition and treatment needs.
  4. Describe how a typically-developed child of 12 months, 2 years and 4 years will interact with an age-appropriate book.
