Sleep: Physiology, Dysfunction, and Treatment
Insomnia is highly prevalent affecting 30% of the general population, about 10% of whom have chronic insomnia. Understanding the physiology and treatment of insomnia is key to the competent and effective provision of primary care and mental health care to the population.
This activity is designed to provide learners with updates on the available research related to sleep disorders, comorbidity with psychiatric issues, the elements that make a healthy sleep pattern, the predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors that create the insomnia pattern, and how they can be addresed through lifestyle change, therapy, and, if needed, pharmacotherapy. Learners will be able to incorporate sleep screening tools, explain basic therapy interventions, and formulate responsible pharmacologic interventions.
