The Periscope Project: Early Relational Health as a Vital Sign: Promoting an Infant Mental Health Perspective in the Context of Perinatal Care

Session Description:

This one-hour video was recorded live on April 10, 2024 at 12pm CST. Dr. Maria Muzik, MD, Katherine L. Rosenblum, PhD, and Rena A. Menke, PhD discussed the dyadic relationships between infant and parent in maternal mental health. 

Program Description: 

The Periscope Project is a statewide provider-to-provider perinatal psychiatric access program. It offers three core services to build capacity in front line health care providers to manage mental health conditions in pregnant, postpartum, and preconception patients:

  1. Provider to Perinatal Psychiatrist consultation within 30 minutes Monday – Friday 8 am to 4 pm.
  2. Linkages with community-based resources that support perinatal women’s mental health.
  3. Education and training for providers and staff on evidence-based treatment of perinatal psychiatric conditions.

Periscope can help OB/GYNs, midwives, family medicine, psychiatrists, and pediatricians by providing:

  • Support with caring for perinatal patients with mental health needs.
  • Health care providers with a treatment plan to bridge patients to psychiatric care.
  • Education on perinatal mental health diagnosis and treatment.
  • Reassurance on treatment of perinatal mental health disorders.
  • Connections for patients to local mental health resources.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze evidence for early relational health as a vital sign for infant and young child health and development and conceptually how to integrate into perinatal practice. 
  • Evaluate through video and case vignettes provides opportunities to identify “clinical moments” (or targets) for dyadic/relational brief intervention from an infant mental health perspective. 
  • Implement “hands-on” strategies during clinical encounters for supporting and nurturing infant mental health that can be implemented in primary care.
