Reducing Health Care and Stigma and Providing Comprehensive Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

This 4-hour course provides evidence-based treatment/management strategies for patients with certain types of pain and or substance abuse disorders. This course has been approved by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board as meeting the requirements for a continuing education course on the responsible opioid prescribing guidelines per Med 13.03(3) of the Wisconsin Administrative Code.

Target Audience

Healthcare professionals who care for patients who use opioids and other controlled substances.

Learning Objectives

Learners who engage in this educational intervention will be able to:
  • Review the epidemiology of opioid use disorder (OUD)
  • Identify methods to reduce harm in patients with OUD
  • Develop plans to help patients with OUD

NEJM Knowledge+

This FREE 10-hour CME/CE training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders satisfies the new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all DEA-registered practitioners.  This module includes 62 case-based questions to claim CME credits.  It is mapped to the FDA Opioid Analgesic REMS blueprint, incorporates current guidelines in the appropriate use of opioids for pain management, and promotes evidence-based strategies for recognizing and treating opioid use disorder.

The 36.5 hours of CME activities listed on this page can be taken in any combination to fulfill the eight-hour DEA requirement.  Domains include: Basics of Safe Opioid Prescribing and Management, Basics of Addiction Treatment, Management of Addiction in Special Populations, Opioids and Fatalities: Prevention and Management, Addiction Medicine During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
 

Providers Clinical Support System

The 23 modules in this 2023 curriculum provide an overview of evidence-based practices in the prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions for a variety of populations. Healthcare professionals who complete this curriculum should see an increase in their competence and confidence as they treat patients who are diagnosed with a substance use disorder.  The curriculum is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners or other advanced practice nurses, PAs, pharmacists, and the healthcare team. Each stand-alone module is available at no cost and includes: one 30-to-60-minute virtual presentation, with option of closed captioning, 1 pre and 3 post reflection evaluation questions, a certificate following each completed module with continuing education ranging from 0.75 to 1.25 credits, choice of available CE Credit types: AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, AAPA Category 1 CME, Nursing Contact Hours, Pharmacy CE Credit, Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Credit.
