Sandra Burge, PhD

Act Scholarly!  Embrace Your Inner Behavioral Scientist
Sandra K. Burge PhD, a graduate of Purdue University, is a social scientist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Now retired, Dr. Burge was Director of Behavioral Science curricula for the family medicine residency program for 30 years. Her teaching focus was doctor-patient communication skills and health behavior change. Over time, she assumed leadership for residents’ research curriculum as well.  
As a researcher, she examined alcohol misuse and interpersonal violence in patients in primary care settings. She teamed up with David Katerndahl and others to complete several studies using complexity science to document patterns of violent behaviors in couples.
As part of a national effort to build research capacity in Family Medicine, Dr. Burge initiated a practice-based research network of 12 residency programs across Texas. Over 20 years, the Residency Research Network of Texas (RRNeT) completed 20 studies with help from medical students enrolled in a research elective. The network published 20 journal articles, received 18 research honors, and presented more than 80 papers at professional conferences – half of these were student posters. Two RRNeT students are now on the faculty at UT Health San Antonio.
Dr. Burge has provided research mentorship to medical students, family medicine residents, junior faculty, faculty development fellows, and STFM behavioral science fellows. Last fall, she received the Distinguished Mentor Award from NAPCRG – the North America Primary Care Research Group.

Dennis J. Butler, PhD

Forty Years: The Changing Psychology of Being a Behavioral Science Educator
Dr. Butler taught behavioral science to family medicine residents from 1980 to 2018.  Dr. Butler earned his doctorate in Psychology at Marquette University and completed a fellowship at the Victor Gollancz Foundation in the Federal Republic of Germany.  He served as Program Chair for The Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine for 14 years and was a steering committee member for the STFM Behavioral Science-Family Systems Fellowship.  His research interests include the impact of traumatic health events, resident well-being, educational methods including video-recording in training and the integration of mental health services in health care. He received an Alumni Achievement Award from Marquette University in 2010. 

Colleen Fogarty, MD, MSc

Dr. Fogarty is a Family Physician who practices full spectrum care for children and adults at Highland Family Medicine in Rochester NY. A community health center "lifer", she enjoys the diversity of the patients and families she sees at the health center and plays an active role in teaching Family Medicine residents training there.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Fogarty works with fellows and residents at the University of Rochester/Highland Hospital Department of Family Medicine, where she serves as the Associate Chair and Medical Director of Highland Family Medicine.
Dr. Fogarty earned her medical degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed residency in Family Medicine at the University of Rochester. She has additional training in Family Systems from the University of Rochester and a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the Boston University School of Public Health.
Her special clinical interests include working with patients coping with post-trauma symptoms, women's health, and caring for young children.
