Session 2: Medical Genetics

Medical Genetics, Undiagnosed and Rare Diseases allows participants to examine the application of genomics to core clinical systems and applying that knowledge to personalized management of patients.

1. Examine the evolving nature of molecular technologies as applied to medical diagnostics.
2. Identify the current state of testing to apply some of the tools in result interpretation.
3. Illustrate the importance of accurate phenotyping and the role it plays in diagnostics.

This module is presented with a pre-recorded PowerPoint presentation and sound.  An audio lecture is given using visual key points listed on the PowerPoint presentation.  Following the presentation, learners will be asked quiz questions to test retainment of knowledge gained in the presentation. Learners are able to complete the module at their own pace.

Donald Basel is the Medical Director for the clinical genetics’ services for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Chief of the Division of Genetics within the Department of Pediatrics. He is the Associate Director for the Rare and Undiagnosed Disease Program within the Genome Sciences and Precision Medicine Center. He is the Director of the Medical Genetics Fellowship training program and Medical Director for the Masters in Genetic Counseling program within the Institute of Health and Equity. He has devoted much of his career to education initiatives within the field of genomics and is an advocate for precision health through genomic medicine.
